The Railroad Mural in Greene Espel's Halls

Visitors often ask about "that interesting railroad painting" along Greene Espel's corridors. The panoramic landscape, painted by an unknown artist in 1936, gives our guests a window seat on an historic rail trip from downtown Minneapolis to Wisconsin. Originally painted as a backdrop to a model train, the "Golden Grain Belt Route" passes the urban skyline of Minneapolis and its warehouse district, through the hilly countryside, to small-town LaCrosse, Wisconsin. Along the way, the Depression-era mural captures many iconic examples of American advertising, including "Coca-Cola, the Pause that Refreshes." You can see portions of the mural and read about it in PDF, or visit in person.
