Federal Court Upholds $11M Jury Award Against Toyota

On June 9, 2017, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit upheld a 2015 jury verdict, which found Toyota at fault for a 2006 fatal car crash and awarded client Koua Fong Lee and other victims $11.4 million. Toyota had appealed the jury verdict, challenging the district court’s admission of expert testimony and other similar-incidents evidence. In a unanimous decision, the Eighth Circuit rejected Toyota’s arguments and affirmed the verdict.

Greene Espel's Kevin Zhao served as co-counsel with lead trial counsel Robert Hilliard, of Hilliard, Munoz, Gonzales LLP, in a four-week trial in January 2015. Kevin was also part of the legal team representing Mr. Lee during the appeal. The Eighth Circuit’s decision is featured in recent Star Tribune and Law360 articles.
